What is Dry Eye?

Despite its name the eyes are not usually dry in "dry eye."  The dry eye is one that lacks oils to keep the tears from evaporating.  This condition rarely exists by itself. If it is by itself,  it is often related to lid pathology.  Often there are other symptoms of the body lacking appropriate oils.  These other systemic signs are:  arthritis,  dry skin,  dandruff, weak fingernails, Sjogrens Syndrome and Lupus.

Causes:

The cause of dry eye is mostly unknown. Some conditions that can cause or aggravate it are: Blepharitis (lid disease),  Lasik surgery (nerve damage),  Computer Usage (slows blink rate),  Hormonal changes (menapuse).  Diseases that may be associated with dry eyes include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes , Asthma, Thyroid disease (affects lids), Lupus..  Drinking too much coffee, smoking, wearing contact lenses, air-conditioning or heat. can also be aggravating.  

Medications That Can Cause Dry Eye Symptoms

  1. Ulcer medications
  2. Antidepressants
  3. Blood pressure medications
  4. Diuretics  (also for blood pressure)
  5. Antihistamines
  6. Birth control pills
  7. Appetite suppressants
  8. Antibiotics

Allopathic Treatment (traditional medicine)

Treatment is usually eye drops to maintain lubrication.  This may include the use of petroleum jelly like ointments before bed time. In some cases plugs may be implanted in the lids to prevent the tears from draining out of the eye area.  In severe cases contact lenses are used as bandages.  Medications such as RESTASIS (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion, 0.05%) can be used to stimulate tear production.

LifeStyle Changes

  1. Stop drinking caffeine and sodas, avoid aspartame in any form.  Avoid any modified oils and fats such as Hydrogenated oils.  
  2. STOP smoking in any form as it damages eye tissues and is a major cause of macular degeneration.
  3. Avoid MSG in all foods.
  4. Limit Alcohol intake.
  5. If you are taking allopathic medications,  try to eliminate as many as possible with your doctors help!
  6. Aerobic exercise is essential.  Consider 1 hours exercise 3 - 5 days a week  This may be walking,  jogging or any other form that enhances circulation.
  7. Stress reduction is very helpful.  Consider meditation,  Yoga  or even simply watching videos such as comedies, before sleep.
